For kids, every summer passes far too quickly. Before we know it the days get shorter and the trees fade into their autumn colors. Soon it will be time for children to trade in their days of freedom and adventure for early mornings, bus rides, and homework.

According to the Omaha Public Schools website, student’s will return to school on Wednesday, August 12th. As the Back to School effect takes over our families, we thought we’d share some of the upcoming back to school events and sales in the Omaha area. We hope you’ll have the chance to enjoy some of these as a family before the hustle and bustle of the school year begins.

Stuhr Museum

Go Back to School in Railroad Town at the one-room Peters School. This event, put on by the Stuhr Museum is both educational and fun. Kids and adults alike will have the opportunity to go to school 1890’s style for a day. Activities will include placement tests, similar to those children would have taken in the late 1800’s, recess games, and more. Admission is only $10 per adult and $8 per child. Learn more on the Stuhr Museum special events page.

Restore Community Church

Join Restore Community Church for a Back to School Celebration! Hosted at Anderson Middle School, the event will take place Saturday, August 8th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be food, inflatables, face painting, games, and more. This is a family-friendly event, so bring the whole crew! See the flyer here.

Omaha Children’s Museum

Included in regular museum addition, on Saturday August 8th, kids can take part in the Back to School Bash. The event will feature a Back to School science show, decorate your own notebook/bookmark station, and much more. Contact the Omaha Children’s Museum or check out their website to learn more!

Gifford Farm

Bring the family, a picnic dinner, and get ready to give the summer a great send off. Gifford Farm’s Summer Send-Off & Teacher Appreciation Day promises to be a good time for the entire family. Kids and adults alike can enjoy hayrides, visiting the farm animals, roasting marshmallows, and listening to stories around the campfire. The event will be at Gifford Farm, 700 Camp Gifford Road, Bellvue, NE. It takes place on August 15th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at a cost of $5 for everyone two years of age and up.

School Supply Drives

The folks at Family Fun in Omaha have compiled a list of local school supply drives that you can participate in. Every year, thousands of kids are sent to school without all of the required supplies, simply because their families have fallen on hard times. You can help make a difference by donating supplies like pencils, backpacks, and books to the kids in our community at any one of these great events. See the full list of school supply drives here.

We at Hauptman, O’Brien, Wolf & Lathrop, P. C. hope you and your kids will use these ideas as an opportunity to spend a little bit more quality time together before the school year takes off. We wish you and your family a year of good grades, great teachers, and safe travels!
